Digital art show blurs boundaries

An exhibition of digital art, the first of its kind in HCM City, opened on Friday, marking a new outlet for innovation in the city fine arts community.

The exhibition, entitled Nghe Thuat Ky Thuat So (Digital Art), includes around 30 digital paintings challenging the conventional distinctions of the abstract or realist schools of art.

The exhibit features the works of Pham Do Dong, Le Kinh Tai and Phan Nhat Phuong. Each artist portrays different emotions and themes in the works they created using computer technology.

Although the themes at the heart of the works differ, Dong with The Gioi Co Tich (Legend World), Tai with Khat Vong Chinh Phuc Ban Than (Aspiration to Self-conquer) and Phuong with Thien Nhien Va Con Nguoi (Nature and Humanity), the artists share an exploration of digital art in fresh and bold ways.

Over the past several years, this style of art has appeared in exhibits all over the world, but is considered new in Viet Nam, Phuong said.

"You are wrong to think that only paintings drawn by brush are artistic," Phuong emphasised. Instead of using a brush and paint, the computer provides another tool for an artist to express his emotions, thoughts, and language.

Phuong has composed 100 digital works using computer software including Painter, Microsoft Expression, Art Rage and others.

In recent years, other artists such as Ho Hong Linh and Vu Linh, both from HCM City Fine Arts College, have used their computers to compose paintings and established a forum for those who like digital art painting.

Creating art using computers is a legitimate medium for artists who have creativity and passion, stated the Head of HCM City Fine Arts Association, Uyen Huy.

Huy added that the current exhibition will serve as an excellent introduction to digital art and hopefully result in the creation of a digital art club. The next exhibition from HCM City Fine Arts College students will take place next month.

The paintings are being showcased through next Sunday at the Fine Arts Association, 218A Pasteur, in District 3.
