Traditional Wedding Costume

Trang Phuc Cuoi (Traditional Wedding Costume) is the traditional wedding costume for Vietnamese people. The costume is ao dai, but it is rather special from those seen in a daily basis.

Usually, ao dai is worn as uniform by high school girls and as business attire for women. In formal meetings or parties, many Vietnamese women often prefer them because they are beautiful and classic.

Nowadays, both brides and grooms are developing preferences for them. These admirers are not just Vietnamese, but foreigners as well. As regards the ao dai for bride, it is made of high-quality silk. The cloth is often red and is beautifully decorated with many patterns, such as pearls and diamonds, and pictures that represent the happiness, prosperity and longevity. The bride also wears khan vanh, a kind of traditional headwear that goes parallel with ao dai and is similar to a turban, but is decorated.

Though many men do not wear ao dai except for important cultural festivals, many wear the ao dai for weddings. The cloth is similar to that of brides but very much looser. They also have headwears called khan dong, which is similar to khan vanh but has no decorations. Their attires are often blue, yellow and, sometimes, black.

In the picture, a couple of foreign tourists in Vietnamese traditional wedding costumes join the cyclo parade, a part of Quang Nam-Indochina Cultural Heritage Meeting that was aimed at making a close culture and tourism link between Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
