The morning glory of basket boats

Every day in the wee hours of the morning, the women and children of Mui Ne gather and wait on the shore of a local fishing port, located on the farthest point of the resort village, for their fathers, husbands and brothers to row their basket boats ashore.

When spotting the basket boats laden with fish and other catches of the sea bobbling on the waves far away, the women and children run into the water to help, laughing and chatting as they bring in the boats.

Since the basket boats are too small to go out far enough to catch big fish, the fishermen often net small fish, shrimp and crabs during the night. The fishermen will sell what they catch to traders right on the beach of the fishing port or fry the fish along the road in front of their homes and sell the fried products to restaurants in the resort village, wholesalers and markets in the downtown area of Phan Thiet City.

The fishing port is filled with laughter, chatter and bargains when the fishermen return with full loads of catches from the ocean. The simple citizens of Mui Ne share not only their joys but also their sorrows when relatives come ashore with empty boats or small loads.

The excited atmosphere will last until the sun rises high. The fishermen do not forget to keep some of their fruits from the sea to share with their family members before rowing their baskets to the ocean for another night on the waters.

You can rent a bicycle to ride to the fishing port otherwise ask a motorcycle taxi to take you there in the early morning.
